Just to correct a few people, she only has to keep the helmet on until the transformation is complete.

Again I'm seeing a whole horrible BORG-Esque senario. Just because the Legion is nice now who's to say this new "Queen" won't induct her own followers into the collective?

@Guest:the helmets i mean

Reply Lord T Hawkeye, June 21st, 2012, 5:17 pm

@Guest: Remember in Batman Begins when he's showing him that top of the line kevlar armor and he says it never caught on because "They figured a soldier's life wasn't worth 300,000$"? That's probably why.

Reply Heliotroph (Guest), June 21st, 2012, 9:44 pm

@a1993: Considering what the Legion did...well, while I wouldn't necessarily consider individuals in the collective to be evil, the race as a whole was/still is kinda. Free will = morality = life.

The main reason they aren't as reviled as, say, the borg - and let's be honest here - is because they resemble beautiful, busty females designed to appeal to the tg/transformation crowd.

Reply bluedarky (Guest), June 22nd, 2012, 6:09 am

@Heliotroph: It probably also helps that we've only really seen them since the legion war, since then there growth hasn't been as aggressive and they only convert volunteers.

troll @some guy: lmao ur a legion troll

Reply Heliotroph (Guest), June 22nd, 2012, 7:55 pm

@MitchTF: How, exactly, have they supported these principles? Life maybe, but something without at least a smidgen of free will is really no different from a machine.

Now, I don't pay much attention to the mythos that created them, but if there aren't such things as Legion rebels, discontents, criminals, and so forth (not counting individuals who took certain precautions like the criminal depicted above), they do not have true free will. You will always find dissatisfied individuals in ANY society. They may be extremely rare, but they will always be present. In fact, it's the sign of a healthy, dynamic culture. You could make the argument that applying human social norms to an alien species isn't fair, but that still doesn't support the argument they have/value true free will.

And again, let's be honest here: the Legion are, to a certain extent, fetish bait for the tg/transformation/mind control crowd. There was a bit more thought put into them than you might expect, but don't pretend they have a lot of depth.

Look, read A Clockwork Orange. It makes a better argument for the value of free will and choice than I could ever make.

Reply Lord T Hawkeye, June 22nd, 2012, 9:02 pm

@Heliotroph: "but if there aren't such things as Legion rebels, discontents, criminals, and so forth (not counting individuals who took certain precautions like the criminal depicted above), they do not have true free will."

Well then you'll be happy to know that such individuals do exist. There's legion pirates out there for one thing. Legion do disagree about all manner of things from philosophy to personal tastes. All the hive mind does is make them privy to each other's feelings. How they react to this knowledge is their own choosing.

Althea's complete change in philosophy should have been your first clue honestly. The very ability to change your mind demonstrates free will.

Reply MitchtF (Guest), June 22nd, 2012, 9:09 pm

THere are Legion rebels, discontents, etc...they just tend to be severed, not talked about, and...EXTREMELY rare.

And, as mentioned: Post-war Legion have free will. They are free to, if they wanted, tell the queen to go pollinate herself. (And, some do).

Reply Heliotroph (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 3:40 am

@Lord T Hawkeye: Again, I don't pay much attention to the mythos in question, so I have no idea who Althea is. If that's the case, the modern Legion do have a modicum of free will. But it does appear to mess with one's mind enough to motivate our friend above wear a rather expensive piece of equipment. That's still a little unsettling.

Reply Siccarus (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 8:20 am

@msfhigh lover117: Word of God (Akashi?) says that they are not weak to Fire (oddly enough), should be Immune to weed spray and have rock solid armor. I would instead suggest either extreme cold or Salt to mess with her PH levels and wither her.

Reply Morshu (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 6:24 pm

@Lord T Hawkeye: just wondering, would she feel the urge to make more legion like norm legion, or is she invulnerable to that because she wore the helmet?

Reply MysticJoJo (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 6:28 pm

Legion Clarification Troph: Althea was the original Legion Queen. Near the end of the war she realized what she had become and granted one last gift to her daughters, the restoration of their original memories and free will, killing herself in the process. Modern Legion DO have free will and can leave a hive if they truly want to, but nost modern converts want to help their planet's environemnt enough that that's the most important thing to them. Julian needs the helmet because a Legion Queen is a different matter. The Queen feels a strong connection to her home planet and a driving need to make the world a better place in as many ways as they can. Obviously, these goals may run counter to the standard M.O. of a crime lord.

MSFHigh Lover117: Word of God when it comes to MSF High or Mahou Galaxy is me, Aakashi's boyfriend Wraith. Legion aren't any more succeptible to fire than humans, though mind you humans don't take being burned pretty well either. While weed-killer is about as effective on Legion as rat trap poison is to humans, there are herbicides created to damage or kill Legion girls. In addition, the armor that Legion have differs in strength from relatively weak(Biotechnicans and Renewers) to reasonably tough(Battlers and Defenders), but it tends to be weaker than manufactured counterparts, its real strength lying it its ability to quickly be changed and the fact that it's carried around with the legion wherever they go. Legion tend to be suited to whatever environment they're needed in, as their primary duty is that of planetary maintenance or terraforming.

Reply Guest, June 23rd, 2012, 6:31 pm

@MysticJoJo: althea didn't die when she did that; she hid herself from civilization but woke up at MSF high.

Reply MysticJoJo (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 6:34 pm

@Guest: As far as Legion outside of MSF High know, she died. I know she's at MSF High.

Then I have to question why you would try to deeply analyze a race you know so little about.

Reply Heliotroph (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 9:13 pm

@Lord T Hawkeye: To bait you. :)

Joking aside, I didn't so the argument wasn't really justified. I apologize for that.

I guess my silly rants stem from a bias against MSFHigh in general. It comes across as a parody/mishmash of anime, fantasy, science fiction and crossover fanfiction cliches with a heavy dose of fetishism thrown in, but at times it takes itself waaay too seriously. Yes, I'm more than aware of the irony of the previous statement, but it doesn't mean I'm wrong. The artist/writer/creator in particular is a bit thinned-skinned, which is a dangerous trait in any artist (a trait which you seem to lack, thankfully).

Reply MitchellTF (Guest), June 23rd, 2012, 11:52 pm

You do realize that Wraith 1. Also does layouts and such for this comic (Which ally draws), and 2. He just posted above you?

And Bad Heliotroph. Don't bait the writer! ...Of course, I might be biased for MSFhigh, seeing as 1. I lived with Wraith for a short period, and 2. I run the forum RP.

Reply Lord T Hawkeye, June 24th, 2012, 12:00 am

@Heliotroph: Let's see now...

You throw around the word fetishism a little too liberally for my tastes. Care to properly define the term?

Where exactly does MSF take itself too seriously? It has serious moments but no more than what you'd see on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

"The artist/writer/creator in particular is a bit thinned-skinned"
I used to frequent the process forums myself. He's a monk compared to a lot of them.

@Lord T Hawkeye: The artist/writer/creator in particular is a bit thinned-skinned. I used to frequent the process forums myself. He's a monk compared to a lot of them.

As a response to one of his/her drawings on DA, I added a link to a image that poked fun of the concept behind the picture - nothing profane or outright cruel, and the link was to another DA page so there wasn't any malware threat. His/her response was to hide the comment and immediately block me from commenting again. It was the first and only post I've made on his page. If that's not thin-skinned, I don't know what is. The only other possible explanation was that he didn't want the link to draw any traffic to my DA page, which would be incredibly petty.

By fetishism, I mean incorporating aspects of a particular fetish - transformation, transgender, mind control, etc. - into the story line when it serves little other purpose other than to entice the reader, i.e. fan service. Nothing wrong with a moderate amount of it, but too much means readers are more likely to like the work for its content rather than the quality of the story itself, e.g. Jack Chalker's Well World series. This kind of gets into why I think the series takes itself too seriously. A lot of its appeal comes from its blatant fanservice yet it seems like many fans consider it an innovative, epic space opera on par with Star Wars. Maybe I've just been meeting the wrong fans.

I don't have any delusions of grandeur regarding my own stuff. I write about werewolves and many of my fans are drawn to it simply because there are werewolves present, not so much because of the quality of my writing. I try to incorporate interesting themes, philosophies, and subtext, but at the end of the day I'm only an adequate writer at best and a lot of my popularity stems from my chosen subject matter and not because I'm the next J.K. Rowling.

And I'm more than aware who the artist is and that he's on the boards.

Now, let's drop this silly debate and enjoy the damn webcomic.

Reply MysticJoJo (Guest), June 24th, 2012, 3:12 pm

@Heliotroph: "Whee, I say this is the end so I automatically win!"

I get sick of people who say that when they want to stop people from making any counterpoints. Now, as a reply to your stuff...

Your Block: Given our large viewership pool, we regularly come under attack from trolls, spammers, and others who outright hate us and want to demean, demotivate, or defame us. It's possible that we might have jumped the gun on your ban in the first place, but the way you've been carrying on since shows to me that you aren't interested in doing much other than whining about why you hate us so much. In addition, Aakashi recognized your name from multiple comments, so your claim that that was your very first comment sounds fishy.

Fetishism: There's very, very few transformations in the MSF High comic. Only two at most are considered anything other than side-jokes. By your definition, Ranma 1/2 should be considered hardcore pornography, while Ah My Goddess and You're Under Arrest are clearly automotive engine pronography. And the argument that our stuff is bad because other people you've talked to like it is so incredibly invalid that I feel I don't have to address it. If you're referring to our work on Deviantart, there's a good reason it's loaded with TF art, and that's because we DRAW COMMISSIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE TF.

On your humility: You said that clearly to try to make us look bad, but you're going to have to provide some example of our egos swelling out of control to justify using "I'm so humble" as an argument against us. I think if you look you'll find that we're relatively open to our fans, I will speak with just about anyone on AIM, YIM, Steam, MSNIM, or Skype and leave them all open to talk as friends with anyone who enjoys our work. If you think that we have huge egos simply because there are some people who respect us, then you are projecting how YOU would act in that situation over us, rather than looking at what we actually do.

Artist+He: Have you been reading anything we've said? There are two of us. I'm Wraith, the writer, and the artist is Aakashi, who goes by AkuOreo on Deviantart. There are numerous people who have visited us in person who could confirm us, as well as videos showing the two of us. If you plan to continue baselessly insulting us, at least do us the courtesy of getting a few facts straight.

Reply Heliotroph (Guest), June 24th, 2012, 5:20 pm

I realize it's a cheap tactic, but I do genuinely think this debate has gone on too long. If it'll help put an end to this, I'll concede I was pretty thoughtless and baseless in my criticisms of the series. For that I apologize.

That said, I think your block WAS an overreaction. Now that I think about it I did post more than one response, but it was to a related series of drawings and only one per piece. Again, while they did poke fun at the picture, they wern't outright insulting or mean. More to the point, trolls, spammers, and their ilk are just a part of life on the Internet. If your kneejerk reaction is to remove any criticism - sound or otherwise - you will come across as thin-skinned. That said, it's your dA account so you can block and hide whatever you want.

And, uh, I never criticized you for being standoffish and not open with your readers. I don't think I even suggested it. Even if you are extremely accessible and regularly chat with your fans that doesn't mean you are humble. Egotistical and unapproachable are not the same thing.

As for the name/person confusion, people use a lot of different aliases on the net. Sorry for the mix-up, but honestly it's not that big a deal.

Reply MysticJoJo (Guest), June 24th, 2012, 5:27 pm

@Heliotroph: Well, I'll agree that we did it prematurely, so I'll have Ally(Akuoreo) unblock you. I hope you understand, though, that while, yes, trolls and such are par for the net course, the ONLY way to effectively deal with them is to cut out their ability to voice their vitriol--they thrive on people seeing and reacting to their BS. It can be difficult for us at times to figure out where to draw the line, as the internet lacks subtlety and it's hard to gauge someone's intentions. As for the ego thing, I don't really see any evidence of us being egotistical.

Now that that's out of the way, just out of curiosity, would someone who used that helmet be immune to feeling the need to make more legion, also would they be incapable of using the legion hive mind?

Reply MysticJoJo (Guest), June 24th, 2012, 11:53 pm

@Guest: That's the idea behind the helmet, yes. And there's no hive mind with no other Legion on the planet.
